Andrea Marroquin
John Brown University
Class of 2012
Guatemala
Andrea Marroquin didn’t wait until she had a college diploma in hand to impact her home country. Through her involvement with the Students In Free Enterprise team at John Brown University, Marroquin developed a plan to bring a hydroponic gardening model to the Guatemalan villages of LaCumbre and LaTana. By the end of her freshman year, she not only introduced the model but was responsible for the first successfully grown tomatoes in the region’s history.
Alfredo Lemus
University of the Ozarks
Class of 2010
Guatemala
During his freshman year at University of the Ozarks, Alfredo Lemus became a critical member of the school’s Alpha & Omega mission trip to his native Guatemala. In collaboration with missionary doctors, the group coordinated an effort to extend medical treatment to more than 2,500 Guatemalans in need. Lemus was so moved by the experience that he became involved with similar mission trips to Panama, El Salvador and, even though it took place following his graduation, Nicaragua.
Lucero Gutierrez
Harding University
Class of 2010
Mexico
Lucero Gutierrez discovered her calling within days of arriving on campus. Through the Jesus Project at Harding University, she was among several students who raised money and traveled to impoverished areas of El Salvador to deliver school supplies, face-to-face interaction and whatever else it took to encourage children to stay in school. All the while, she was taking notes and drawing up a plan to mirror that program in her native Mexico.
