Our Values

Creating Opportunity

Walton Scholars embrace the ideals and beliefs that define the Walton International Scholarship Program including faith, leadership and integrity. And while most values are learned in childhood, Walton Scholars nurture these values and others on university campuses through opportunities they are given to lead and serve.

Walton Scholars understand that a world-class education has the potential to enrich their lives and the lives of those around them, and we encourage them to embrace opportunities to learn and grow as a leader on and off campus.

Our program values leadership, sincerity, integrity, service and faith.

Leadership. Leaders inspire others to create meaningful change for the greater good of humanity. As a businessman, Sam Walton exemplified these skills. As a devoted philanthropist, Helen Walton embodied it by enriching lives and communities around the world. The Walton International Scholarship Program embraces leadership development by encouraging scholars to take on leadership roles on campus and in their home countries.

Sincerity. Confidence empowers individuals and communities alike to realize their full potential, even in the face of adversity. This value is a staple of the Walton International Scholarship Program, enabling young minds to drive innovation and positive change throughout Central America and Mexico.

Integrity. Walton Scholars are held to high moral and ethical principles and to possess character that benefits the program. Honesty and truthfulness should guide scholars in all of their decision making.

Service. Service is the founding principle of the Walton International Scholarship Program. Sam and Helen Walton believed that in order for the program to truly be impactful, students must commit to service on campus and in their home countries. Walton Scholars engage in programs and projects that benefit individuals and communities.

Faith. Spiritual enrichment is an important part of the Walton International Scholarship Program. Walton Scholars are held to high moral and ethical principles. They attend chapel service on their university campuses, utilizing the time for worship and fellowship with fellow scholars and university students. Faith is visible in the character of students, in their work on and off campus, and in their commitment to positive change in their communities and countries.

The very essence of the Walton International Scholarship Program is rooted in these values, values that can lead to opportunity, and opportunity that enhances lives, improves communities and shapes dreams, one student at a time.
