Changing lives. Impacting the world.
The Walton International Scholarship Program has been creating life-changing opportunities, championing faith and empowering young minds to initiate meaningful impact across Central America and Mexico for more than a quarter-century.
Walmart founder Sam Walton and his wife, Helen, launched the program with an unprecedented commitment to fund 60 student scholarships to each of three respected, faith-based Arkansas universities annually. From the beginning, the objective of the program has been to promote democracy and free enterprise in Latin America through education. Each year, rigorous screening processes are carried out in El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Belize and Mexico to identify the next class of students.
A favorite saying of Helen Walton serves as an inspiration for the program, "It's not what you gather, but what you scatter that tells what kind of life you have lived." The Walton International Scholarship Program sees these words carried out by Walton Scholars as part of their commitment to return to their home countries to make meaningful and lasting contributions.
Alumni have gone on to become influential leaders for the world's most successful corporations as well as in government, education, nonprofit and religious sectors. Each year, a new class of students enters the Walton International Scholarship Program motivated to follow in those footsteps.
